Government and DEFRA Support the Domestic Bioethanol Industry 19 July 2011
Following on from a statement made by Andrew Percy, MP, in which
Vireol Ltd was cited, the Minister of State, Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Mr James Paice,
indicated that there is considerable Government support for
sustainably produced bioethanol, following the address to the House
by local MP Andrew Percy on UK bioethanol and the domination of US
imports.
Mr Paice declared that the Government strongly supports the use of biofuels, as long as they are sustainable.
"The industry - particularly the ethanol sector - has done a considerable amount to improve its greenhouse gas savings. The latest data suggest that bioethanol from home-grown wheat and sugar beet achieved direct emissions savings of 60% and 77% respectively, compared with fossil fuels, which is a significant gain."
Mr Paice concluded by saying that the Government will definitely support the domestic bioethanol industry, which "has shown the way forward".
