Sustainability
Benefits
Sustainable RTFs offer an immediate, commercial and technologically viable contribution to CO2 reduction:
- Wheat ethanol can deliver default GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions savings of between 45-75% compared to the fossil fuel equivalent.
- Wheat and other grains have huge potential in the EU. The industry sector has hitherto been dis-incentivised by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the amount of wheat grown but RTFs have the potential to change the competitive landscape for cereal farming. The EU has the land available to grow additional crops with no carbon penalty (set aside) and the potential for yield improvement is huge.
- The protein content of feed wheat is retained in the production of DDGS - an important co-product from the bio-refining process. Therefore, crucially, there is no reduction in the protein levels in the food chain and many of the food vs. fuel arguments are not relevant to sustainable sources RTFs.
